Palliative care is a subspecialty of medicine that focuses on physical, emotional, and spiritual care for patients dealing with a chronic or life-limiting illness to relieve suffering while continuing to treat the underlying disease. Despite the expected increase in the need for palliative care, many health care providers lack awareness of the indications for it and thus, many acute care patients with chronic or life-limiting illnesses have limited access to this type of care (Kerr et al., 2020).
