The Western Front in the Backyard: The archaeological survey of Camp Howze, Texas

In 1942 the United States Army designated a 93 square mile area of Cooke County, Texas to become one of the first temporary wartime bases of World War II within the continental US. Operating from 1942 to 1946, Camp Howze was a training group for several hundred thousand military personnel, and a detainment center for thousands of German prisoners of war. This survey seeks to identify and document features related to the base to determine how the property has changed since it reverted back to private ownership, and to analyze how future archaeologists can determine the location of a World War II era temporary military compound.
