Effect of physical sexuality, geographic locale and sex role adherence upon an individual's perception of the female athlete

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Ss consisted of college men and women, who were enrolled in sections of activity Physical Education/ After completing the survey Ss were placed into subgroups according to their responses to their Attitude Toward Women Scale (AWS) and biographical data. Geographic Locale was based upon the population of the area the Ss lived in during the time they were five to seven years of age. Individuals who came from an area with less than 2,500 people were considered rural inhabitants. Those from an area of more than 10,000 were placed in an urban category. Ss scoring between 30 and 44 on the AWS were neutral sex role adherents. Those scoring 45 or greater were categorized as liberal. All other individuals including Physical Education Majors and minors were eliminated. The DV was derived by subtracting the male scale score from the female scale score on the Bem Sex Role Inventory. An unweighted 2 x 2 x 2 ANOVA revealed that females viewed the female athlete as being significantly more masculine. Male Ss perceived the female athlete in a significantly more feminine manner. Several possible explanations for this result are discussed.
