A comparison of height, weight, and percent body fat of college baseball athletes at the pitcher, catcher, infield, and outfield positions

The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the height, weight, and percent body fat of pitchers, catchers, infielders, and outfielders among college baseball athletes. The subjects participating in this investigation were baseball players ranging from 18-23 years of age and who were members of seven intercollegiate varsity teams within a 150-mile radius of Huntsville, Texas. Data collection occurred during the 1983 fall season. Body density was determined from the sum of three skinfold measurements. Percent body fat was determined by utilizing Siri’s equation. One discriminant function equation accounted for over 91% of the variance and was most heavily loaded on the height variable. Classification procedure categorized pitchers at a most satisfactory level (68%), and was an adequate indicator for both infielders (45%), and outfielders (37%). This procedure was of no value for catchers who were classified at (0.0%)> Explanations of this result are discussed.
