Integration of Psychological Safety in the Chemical Process Industry to Improve Performance and Prevent Incidents
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study aims to explore the integration of psychological safety in the chemical process industry and its potential impact on safety performance and incident prevention. The analysis of existing regulations, along with two major incidents, suggested that psychological safety is beneficial in preventing major incidents and enhancing safety performance. The study indicated that the current safety regulations did not sufficiently address the issue of psychological safety and could be further improved to enhance enforcement and provide guidance for industry leaders on how to develop, sustain, and measure it in the workplace. A high-level model for fostering psychological safety in the workplace was developed for leaders in this industry to start developing and integrating psychological safety into existing safety framework. This model was applied to real-world incidents to show its validity and applicability. Despite some limitations, the study has identified psychological safety as an important factor in the chemical process industry that could affect safety performance and identified the need for it to be incorporated into future research and practices.
