n Geintegreerde taakgebaseerde benadering tot die gebruik van kortverhale en gedigte as taalaanleerhulpmiddel vir tweedetaalstudente

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study focuses on the design of task-based lessons within the constructivist framework and the integrated approach, using short stories and poems as language teaching aids for students taking the module Afrikaans Language Learning 189 from the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch at Stellenbosch University. The ultimate goal of the task-based lessons is to promote language learners’ macro-skills in Afrikaans. In contrast to traditional approaches that use literature for the purpose of literary analysis, this study provides a new perspective that repositions the literary text’s function as a language teaching tool for language practice and interaction. The theoretical foundation for the design of the lessons is based on the constructivist learning theory, the task-based approach and the integrated approach. The research used a case-study design, together with a mixed-methods approach and participatory action research. Observations and inferences were made from questionnaires and previous studies. In this way, triangulation is achieved and this increases the validity and reliability of the study’s findings. Seventeen students participated in the study. The participants first completed a questionnaire. This aimed to determine students’ needs and opinions in terms of literature teaching in the second language classroom. The data was extracted from the questionnaires to design task-based lessons that specifically address students’ needs. The findings highlighted the positive impact of the task-based integrated approach on the language learners’ macro-skills. The contribution of this study includes, among others, task-based lessons for language presenters of Afrikaans as a second language. This is supported by guidelines regarding the teaching of short stories and poems in the language-learning classroom.
