An un-African thing? Same-sex relationships among South African Sangomas, Christian ethics and the discourse on African (protective) homophobia

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The focus of this study is rooted within Systematic Theology and Ethics as it alludes how both Christian and African ethics promotes gender diversity. African Christian ethics, this study draws from the work of various theologians such as Samuel Waje Kunhiyop, “African Christian Ethics”, M.F. Murove, “African ethics: An anthology of comparative and applied ethics” and many others who add value to this research study. This study rejects protective homophobia as a way of life for Christians and Africans. Homosexuals have always been rejected by people who believe that God have only created a men and women. The same concept applies to Africans who claims that homosexuality is a foreign sexual identity that exists to dismantle the values of Africans. The debate on whether homosexuality is African or not is against the ethical values of Africans. On the one hand this study argues that Ubuntu creates a room for a communal environment that does not promote exclusion and suppression. On the other hand, Christian ethics highlights that all humans are created through the image of God and should live as Christ alike. These ethics uproots the existence of protective homophobia.
