Exploring the Maternal Parenting Experiences During and Post-incarceration in South Africa

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study examined the parenting experiences of mothers during and after incarceration. Through a qualitative approach, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven formerly incarcerated mothers who had been in South African correctional facilities. Thematic analysis revealed four primary themes: (i) parenting during incarceration, (ii) reintegration into society, (iii) parenting post-incarceration, and (iv) participant recommendations for parenting. The findings demonstrate that mothers actively maintained their parental role while incarcerated through phone calls, letters, visits, and community support networks, despite institutional constraints and systemic barriers. Reintegration presented significant challenges, including rebuilding trust with children, navigating changed family dynamics, securing housing, employment, and social services. Mothers identified transparency, open communication, and support from extended family, children’s fathers, and community networks as essential for restoring and strengthening parent-child relationships during incarceration and post-release. Ultimately, this study underscores the enduring maternal attachment that motivates mothers to sustain their parenting role even within carceral settings. The findings advocate for holistic approaches that integrate systemic reforms addressing maternal needs, family- and community-centred support programmes, and targeted post-release interventions to facilitate successful reintegration and strengthen mother-child relationships.
