Storytelling using myths through a range of media in the foreign language classroom: Establishing practices to enhance the motivation of primary school learners of English in Greece

This thesis explores the use of storytelling as a motivational tool in the English as a Foreign Language classroom. This research investigates the effectiveness of using myths and a variety of media in storytelling in fostering the motivation of primary school students in Greece. Using a portfolio of three pedagogical practice-research projects, data was collected from teachers through questionnaires and focus group discussions. Results indicate that the use of myths and multimedia can significantly enhance students’ motivation, particularly when teachers integrate complementary activities and when they provide a safe and supportive learning environment. Even though teachers implement a lot of good practices, they need to be supported to engage in innovative teaching methods and face the challenges of the educational system, so that they can further motivate their students. The findings also highlight a shift in teachers’ practices towards more structured storytelling lessons. The study concludes by providing recommendations that will cultivate a learning environment where students can be more engaged and motivated.
