Early-Detection of Diabetic Foot Ulceration using Thermal Images

The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the author's research into the early detection of diabetic foot ulceration using infrared imaging. This project may contribute to better treatment and potentially help to avoid a significant amount of amputations and deaths. An experimental infrared system was developed and successfully tested within the framework of a clinical trial on 109 healthy volunteers and 112 diabetic patients at 3 collaborating clinical centres with the aim of providing information on what differentiates a 'normal', healthy foot from a diabetic foot. <br/><br/>This information was then used to develop a novel methodology for acquiring and analysing thermal data with the aim of identifying suitable predictors for ulceration. Results indicate that the proposed classifiers may be used to forecast diabetic foot ulcers provided assessment intervals are short, ideally daily.
