Mechanical performance of optical fibre cable: A theoretical and practical analysis to establish advanced design rules for optical fibre cables.

This research investigates the properties which influence optical fibre cable life. Four mechanical properties have been investigated, two general, crush and temperature, and two specifically associated with aerial cables, namely electrical degradation and shotgun damage. In addition to these mechanical life limiting properties, the consequences of long term cable water soak on optical fibre performance has been modelled using experimental and simulation techniques. The findings were used to model cable performance and produce design rules. These rules establish the threshold for cable design. The implementation of these design rules reduces development risks, reduces potential liability, and is fundamental to the philosophy to produce a reliable, marketable product. As a result five engineering design rules for optical fibre cables have been established and are in use by the collaborating company. This research has explained associated signal attenuation phenomena and has shown how customer requirements may be successfully achieved through the logical application of proven physical principles.
