Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>This thesis examines the life and work of artist Hale Woodruff, with a particular focus on his six-panel mural entitled The Art of the Negro. Unveiled at Atlanta University's Trevor Arnett Library in 1952, The Art of the Negro was the last mural created during Woodruff's career and represents the culmination of Woodruff's decades-long investigation of the cultural and aesthetic ideas promoted by the leaders of the Harlem Renaissance. The mural asserts the significance of African art while providing a unified cultural identity that draws inspiration from a common African ancestry.</p>
