A prolific composer, Rootham's music has fallen into obscurity since his death. The first chapter presents introductory material outlining the scope of the study. Chapters two and three are an abridged biography and a survey of Rootham's writings on the qualifications of and issues concerning the composition of choral music, the composition and management of the modern orchestra, and issues in choral performance. The remaining chapters provide an annotated outline of his sacred choral music in three categories: 1) choral works with orchestral accompaniment, 2) anthems, and 3) service music.
