By examining the public presence of New Orleans museums in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, this work will explore the role of museums in the early process of disaster recovery. The responses of The Historic New Orleans Collection, the Louisiana State Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, University of New Orleans will be examined to determine in what ways museum exhibitions and programming can aid the individuals in recovering from a widespread, traumatic event. In their efforts to interpret Hurricane Katrina during the first year after the storm these institutions contributed to the recovery of their city. New Orleans museums became sites of gathering and refuge as well as places of emotional confrontation while working to address local needs.
