William Averitt's "Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to St. Matthew": An Analysis With Conducting Considerations

dc:description.abstract<p>William Averitt's "Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to St. Matthew" combines dramatic scenes and hymns that explore the Passion setting tradition in an American context. The composer forges a unique connection with the text, early American shape note hymns, and contemporary harmonic language. A theoretical analysis describes the harmonic structure of the twelve scenes and the use of shape note hymns as chorales through structural and melodic adaptations. Conducting considerations, composer biography and information on the work's origin are included.</p>
