Estrogen deprivation causes vocal changes including hoarseness, breathiness and a reduction in range. In addition, a swelling of the vocal folds and changes in the amount and consistency of the mucous membranes lining the vocal tract are all concerns. Although it is impossible to reverse the aging process, it is important to know that some symptoms may be postponed or corrected. The menopausal student has unique issues related to her voice and responsible pedagogues should be informed of recent findings concerning these issues.
