Three-dimensional modeling of sealing and wear of XTS-210 engine Apex seals

Rotary engines offer a compact, lightweight alternative to conventional reciprocating engines, with advantages such as high power density and fewer moving parts. However, traditional rotary engines such as the Wankel have drawbacks such as excessive seal wear, combustion gas leaks and limited durability. LiquidPiston’s X-Engine features an innovative geometry designed to solve these problems, offering compatibility with compression-ignition fuels, increased efficiency and simplified mechanical design. The engine competes with Wankel rotary architectures in targeted applications such as aeronautics (especially hybrid UAVs) and military tactical generators, where optimization of power-to-weight ratio is essential. This work enhances the understanding of the wear mechanisms that constrain the performance of the XTS-210 and provides recommendations for improving its sealing system through advanced modeling and design optimization.
