Les perturbateurs endocriniens : les défis entourant la réglementation de ces substances chimiques au niveau international, canadien et européen
Abstract
dc:description.abstractEndocrine disrupters (EDs) are chemicals known to prevent the proper functioning of the endocrine system. Their presence in the environment is linked to the prevalence of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, breast, testicular, prostate and brain cancer, obesity, neurobehavioural disorders, but also gender imbalance, fertility disorders and the general decline of intelligence quotient. Pursuant to their intrinsic properties, EDs cannot be treated like any other chemicals, therefore, they cannot be subject to the same risk assessment as the one established in the legislation applicable to chemicals in a general way. Aware of the public health challenges posed by these substances, the European Union has recently banned EDs through its legislation on chemicals, pesticides and biocides. However, in Canada, EDs are not specifically prohibited within chemical or pesticide legislations. Similarly, no binding standards or guidelines are currently in force within the international community. As such, would a specific framework applicable to EDs be essential for the protection of public health? This essay will attempt to highlight this query.
