Contes anglais et autres de Jacques Ferron : introduction critique et traduction en anglais

Because of his role as a chronicler, as one who records the reality of life in Québec, Ferron's writings are of special interest to those English Canadians who often seem baffled by their increasingly restless compatriots. The English Stories and Other Tales translated here are probably among Ferron's most accessible writings for English-speaking Canadians; as such, however, they are not completely typical of the body of his work. Much of what he has written -- and he bas written a great deal in the past twenty years or so -- is difficult to grasp, sometimes impossible for those not thoroughly familiar with the history and culture of French-speaking Québec. One might suppose an English Canadian's reaction to some of Ferron's books would be similar to many French Canadians' feelings about Dominion Day or the Centennial festivities: he might find them exciting and sometimes even moving, but he always feels a little excluded -- no matter how much he enjoys the experience, he knows that it is likely to be more meaningful for those who can participate whole-heartedly.
