Dietary knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of individuals with diagnosed hypercholesterolemia
Abstract
dc:description.abstractA study was conducted to determine the degree of reported compliance with dietary guidelines for lowering blood cholesterol in patients with diagnosed hypercholesterolemia and to identify predictors of good compliance based on knowledge, attitudinal and socio-demographic characteristics. This report presents data obtained from a self-administered questionnaire sent by mail and from abstraction of data from medical charts. Respondents were 245 male and female non pregnant patients over the age of 18 years with diagnosed hypercholesterolemia attending the Family Medicine Clinic at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS). In terms of univariate analysis good compliers with cholesterol lowering guidelines were identified as having a higher level of education and less likely to have children in the home. They practiced other health related behaviours, were at a higher risk of CHD, and were more likely to have been referred to a dietitian. Good compliers reported knowing their personal blood cholesterol levels and perceived their health status more favourably. Good compliers were more knowledgeable about, and had more positive attitudes towards eating in a way that could lower blood cholesterol. They had a positive perception of the situation entailed by this way of eating. The predictive model for compliance with dietary guidelines retained ten variables of diverse subcategories of characteristics. Variables in knowledge, attitude, risk factor, sociodemographic, and situation analysis subcategories were included in the model. The predictive model provided information with which to identify those who comply with dietary guidelines and those who do not comply.
