Evolución de gobernanza de las cadenas de suministro y las relaciones alimentarias en Ecuador. Impactos socioeconómicos, nutricionales y ambientales en territorios amazónicos

This thesis analyses the evolution of Ecuador's food system governance using a multiscalar approach. It integrates historical, sectoral, and territorial evidence. Structured as a thesis-by-compendium, it comprises three peer-reviewed scientific articles. The first article reconstructs the long-term transformations in Ecuador's food system from 1964 to 2007, covering the second and third food regimes and documenting changes in production structures, trade, agricultural and food policies, and dietary patterns. The second article compares the cocoa value chains in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazonia, showing that similar industrial upgrading strategies generate divergent socioenvironmental outcomes due to contrasting institutional and territorial conditions. The third article analyses an indigenous post-cacao agroforestry system in Rukullakta (Napo, Ecuador), detailing the food, monetary, energy, and socio-environmental characteristics of the diet. Taken together, these three articles show that Ecuador's food system has a persistent dual agrarian structure, combining a strong agro-export orientation with territorially diverse practices that sustain alternative forms of production, consumption, and ecological management in the region. The findings also reveal structural limits to fully sustainable upgrading in the Amazonian cocoa supply chain, including the paradox of cocoa contributing to “food from somewhere else”. The articles further specify the conditions under which indigenous agroforestry systems support diversified livelihoods, local food provision, and socioenvironmental resilience. The thesis concludes that understanding Ecuadorian food system dynamics requires integrating structural transformations, sectoral governance, and territorial institutions within the temporal and geographical scope shown in the three articles.
