Characterization of Material’s Elastic-plastic Properties Through Microindentation Testing with a Cylindrical Flat-tip Indenter

<p>Advanced material development requires its properties being characterized in a micro/nano scale. Traditional tests on the macro scale are impractical based on size of specimen and testing equipment. The Berkovich pyramidal sharp tip nano-indenter is not able to be used to find material's plasticity because as it is indenting the specimen the contact area changes. In this investigation the NANOVEA micro/nano-indentation tester coupled with a cylindrical flat-tip indenter will be used to find the material yield strength based on the load-depth graph. Specimens being tested are 6061T6 AISI 4340 and AISI 1018 steel. The tensile tests for the same materials are undergone to find the elastic modulus, yield strength, stress-strain relationship. The tensile testing data are used when comparing tests done on the micro scale for validating the proposed method. A computer model is developed based on finite element analysis for microindentation. Software used in modeling is ANSYS14.5 and an axisymmetric model is built. The experimental microindentation is compared with the computer model. By using cylindrical microindentation the elastic-plastic properties of the materials on the micro scale are able to be found in a fast and feasible way.</p>
