Food Consumption Similarities and Differences for Two Types of Jamaican Households

<p>The study fills a gap in the literature by comparing two types of Jamaican households and how these households differed in their food consumption patterns. This study collected data from two focus groups and 102 survey respondents from the cities of Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Lauderdale Lakes in South Florida. The two types of households were those with Jamaicans married to Jamaicans and those with Jamaicans married to individuals from other ethnic groups. An integrated theoretical framework was developed combining ideas from Bourdieu, Barth’s ethnic boundary theory, Yosso’s cultural capital and Strauss’s negotiated order. There was a significant relationship between the two household types and ethnic food purchases, and frequency of consuming Jamaican dishes at home; and between the importance of preparing authentic Jamaican foods and the belief that it will influence children when they become adults. The relationships between household type and distance willing to go to purchase ethnic foods, restaurant preference, importance of authentic food preparation and meal preparer were not significant. Support for Bourdieu’s habitus was found in the focus group data in terms of the consumption and preparation on native meals. Overall the study showed that there are food consumption disagreements in families whether a person marries within or outside their ethnic culture and most couples negotiate to resolve these disagreements.</p>
