Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>According to the literature relationships among nurses are negative and hostile. However, nurse to nurse peer relationships in workplace environments are complicated and include many positive qualities, including the quality of reciprocity. Reciprocity is a concept that is not defined in nursing literature or emphasized in nursing theory, but may be important when exploring relationships among nurses. Reciprocity is defined by Pritchard (1969) as “equality of perceived investments in and outcomes from a relationship relative to the person's own internal standards” (p. 180). Using Pritchard’s definition, a narrative inquiry is studied to explore the meaning of reciprocity in nurse to nurse peer relationships; how it influences rural healthcare environments that are affiliated with Magnet hospitals; and how reciprocity influences quality inter-professional care with rural underserved populations.</p>
