The Lived Experience of Women Domestic Violence Survivors

The phenomenological study described in this paper examined the lived experience of adult women survivors of domestic violence. Self-identified domestic violence survivors (N=3) participated in non-structured self-written interviews submitted by email to the researcher. The stories were analyzed by the researcher and a member of her thesis committee using Heideggerian phenomenology to identify common meanings and themes in the texts. The major findings of the study suggested three major themes of lived experience among domestic violence survivors: "The loss of self respect is death," "the terror itself holds the power," and "the consequences of indulging the abuser's hedonistic desires and inclinations."
