Generational Differences in Work Orientation of Nursing Students

<p>This descriptive comparative study was designed to describe the attitudes, values, and work orientation of three generations of nursing students: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials. The purpose of this research is to construct a nursing knowledge base on generational differences in work values and their influence on interactions in nursing education. Generational differences in work values and their effect on nursing education are crucial subjects to address as they relate to nursing, patient care, educational institutions, students, and nursing faculty.<br> The setting was two large nursing programs within the Midwest that offer private and public baccalaureate degrees. A generational differences survey tool was created from the literature and composed of demographic information, questions on generational differences, and a case study. The research sample was composed of Generation X and Millennial nursing students; no Baby Boomers participated. No significant differences were found between the two generational cohorts that participated. Construction of this knowledge base has vast implications for nursing education, delivery, practice, patient care, and research.</p>
