Student Response Systems: The Impact on Nursing Student Engagement and Classroom Participation

Educational pedagogy has evolved from an instructor-led teaching style to that of an active student learning environment. Student response systems (SRS) have been introduced as a teaching tool to increase student participation and engagement in many classrooms; however, there is a lack of research to determine its efficacy especially within a nursing student population. A descriptive research study that reviewed survey data from 688 undergraduate students (Graham, 2007) was duplicated with a nursing focus using the same survey tool. The survey assessed the students' perception of participation, preparedness, engagement, and value of the SRS technology within the classroom. A convenience sample of 32 senior nursing students was surveyed. The use of the SRS as a communication tool provided instant feedback to students and the instructor as well as the opportunity to gauge knowledge and understanding of the course material. The findings of the study showed that the majority of students were more interested in the course material, were active participants in their own educational development, and used the SRS to focus on the key concepts presented in class. Furthermore students' reported that they participated less in distracting activities such as instant messaging, texting, and surfing the Internet while in class. The SRS is a valuable teaching tool that increases students' engagement, enjoyment, and participation and creates an active learning environment.
