Registered Nurses' Attitudes Towards Orientation Program
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this survey was to describe registered nurses' attitude toward an orientation program. The framework was based on a review of the literature. A 94- item questionnaire was personally delivered, or mailed with a follow up phone call, to 41 registered nurses completing an orientation program in a 450+ bed Midwestern hospital. The descriptive analysis and hypothesis testing is based on the 40 registered nurses who returned the completed tool. The findings indicated that the registered nurses were satisfied overall with the content and teaching modalities of an orientation program. The most frequent advantages indicated were preceptor benefits, clinical experience, socialization, and length of orientation. A significant relationship was found between satisfaction with general content of orientation and the registered nurses' satisfaction as a nurse and perception of being prepared for the position. A significant relationship was also found between satisfaction with teaching modalities used in orientation and the registered nurses' satisfaction as a nurse, perception of being prepared for the position, and intent to stay. The findings suggest that institutions monitor the effectiveness of preceptor programs and satisfaction with content and teaching modalities of registered nurse orientation. Since these parameters affect job satisfaction and intent to stay, cost conscious hospital educators must consider the impact of orientation on the overall budget.
