However, there are few published accounts of diabetes intervention studies with Native Americans. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Staged Diabetes Management on metabolic control in Native American patients with Type It diabetes as compared to traditional diabetes management.<br /> The experimental group consisted of 54 Native American patients with type n diabetes who were treated with Staged Diabetes Management. The control group consisted of an equal number of Native American patients with type n diabetes who were treated with traditional diabetes management. Levels of glycated hemoglobin or HbAlc at 0, 6, and 12-month intervals were recorded for both groups.<br /> The experimental group had an initial decrease in mean HbAlc from 8.29% to 8.18% over the first 6 months. However, this trend was not sustained over a 12-month period. Instead, the mean HbAlc increased to 8.65% at 12 months. A similar 12-month increase was found for the control group.
