Determining Relationships Among Perceived Health Status and Health Promoting Lifestyles of Frontier Elderly
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of six aspects of a healthy lifestyle (nutrition, exercise, stress management, self-actualization, health responsibility, and interpersonal support) with selected demographic variables and perceived health status. The sample consisted of 52 elderly adults residing in a frontier South Dakota county. Pearson product-moment correlation indicated no significant relationship between the subjects' perceived health status, measured by a Visual Analog Scale, and their Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile score. Statistically significant (p <.05) relationships were found between the demographic variables of educational level and financial status and perceived health status scores. Phi testing found no significant associations of categorized demographic variables to health-promoting lifestyles.
