Impact of Presurgical Learning on Anxiety and Knowledge
Abstract
dc:description.abstract
The major objective of this study was to measure the effect of pre-admission preoperative instructions on anxiety and level of knowledge in surgical patients at time of admission. More definite objectives are stated as:
1. Determine, at time of hospital admission, the anxiety level of patients who received preadmission instructions.
2. Determine the anxiety level of patients at time of hospital admission who have not received postadmission instructions.
3. Determine the ability of patients receiving preadmission instructions to demonstrate and/or explain surgical exercises prior to surgery
4. Determine the ability of patients who have not received preadmission instructions to demonstrate and/or explain surgical exercises prior to surgery.
A second major objective of the study was to validate previous aspects of a research study done by Mukulaninec in 1987. This study will replicate two groups of Mikulaninec's study-the control group and the group who received written instructions prior to admission.
Another study replicated the other half of Mikulanince's research (Reich, 1990). This study replicated the other two groups of Mikulaninec's research using the two groups not examined in this study. The first group in this study received written instructions prior to hospitalization and was tested for knowledge and anxiety level prior to any verbal instructions from the nursing staff. The last group received the written instructions at home and also were given verbal instructions by the researcher. They were tested for knowledge and anxiety after the teaching session.
