Data elements within the Minimum Data Set Plus of South Dakota associated with function were examined. MDS+ assessments completed on admission of CVA patients to long term care facilities were compared to annual MDS+ assessments. The proportion of \"independent\" codes for all ADL tasks increased between initial and annual assessments. The proportion of \"dependent\" codes for all ADL tasks but locomotion also increased. In general, the amount of support provided to residents by staff decreased between initial and annual assessments in the tasks of bed mobility, transfers, locomotion, dressing, eating, toilet use and hygiene.<br> A secondary purpose of the study was to critique the usefulness and accessibility of the MDS+ data components in evaluating outcomes.
