Selected attributes, amount of stress, and perceived education and support needs of 51 adult caregivers of parents or parents-in-law were analyzed. The nonprobability sample was obtained from adult children whose parent or parent-in-law was a patient in a rehabilitation unit. A revised version of E. Matthis' (1989) questionnaire was used to determine how important education and support needs were to the subjects. The Chronbach's alpha was 0.92.
This investigation found that adult children who provide care for a parent or parent-in-law have many learning and support needs, and they also experience a great deal of stress in their roles of caregiver. These findings have implications for nursing and further research.
