Difference between Nurses' Role Conception and Perceived Image

This study determined if a difference exists between the mean scores of the bureaucratic, professional, and service role conceptions of nurses and their perceived image related job characteristics. A nonrandom sample of 213 registered nurses from a midwestern state participated in the study. The nurses were found to have the greatest commitment to the service role conception. The nurses perceived the difficulty of their work, the complexity of their work, and the importance of their work as the job characteristics ranking highly positive in relation to nursing's image. Based on statistical testing, there was a (difference between the mean scores of the service role conception of nurses and their perception of the image related job characteristics: importance of work to society and the authority this occupation has to govern itself. The findings have implications for recruitment and retention of nurses.
