Remote sensing techniques have the potential to provide quantitative and timely information on agricultural crops over large areas. In agricultural planning and policy making knowledge of crop yield is very important. However, for sugar beets, sugar content and other beet properties also directly affect economic benefits. This research investigated the relationship between the spectral characteristics of the sugar beet canopy in the visible and near-infrared bands and the sugar content and quality properties. The analysis results from an experiment conducted in 1996 are presented in this paper. The study revealed that sugar content, sodium, and harmful amino nitrates are statistically significant, to normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and spectral information from several individual bands. Using these results, a simple linear regression and multiple linear regression were performed to derive estimate models for sugar content and other related properties.
