Zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, herpetiles, and fish were collected from two separate riverine. Free-flowing sections of the Upper Missouri River during the spring and summer of 1993. In the Bismarck and Williston study reaches sampling was condicted in seven macrohabitat types: backwaters, side channels, main channel borders, main channels, sandbar complexes, tributary confluences, and vegetated islands. Zooplankton sampling consisted of replicate vertical tows with a plankton net. Macroinvertebrate sampling included a petite ponar dredge for the benthos as well as dipnet smapling. Additionally, the molluskan fauna was sampled through visual observations with the use of a shell bar, and with the petit ponar dredge. Herpetiles were collected through visual observatiosn and with a combination drift fence and funnel trap.
