Evaluation of a Power Plant Reservoir as a Fingerling Walleye Rearing Facility

<p>The 85.8-hectare evaporation reservoir at the Big Stone Power Plant, Grant county south Dakota, was evaluated in 1986 and 1987 as a potential rearing site for fingerling walleyes (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum). Percent of stocked fish harvested was 0.21% (1,874 fish) in 1986 and 0.02% (129 fish) in 1987. Harvest was low because winterkill did not eliminate fish predators from the evaporation pond. Harvested fingerlings averaged 133.0 mm± 4.4 mm (SE) and 122.7 mm± 2.9 mm in total length in September, 1986 and 1987, respectively. Growth was reduced by a late-summer decline in forage fish abundance. The evaporation pond is probably less suitable for rearing fall fingerling walleyes than more natural prairie potholes.</p>
