It is a commonly accepted fact that the purpose of lenticels is to serve as an aperture through which the gases concerned in respiration may pass. The lenticels of the potato tuber should be no exception. The surface area should also greatly influence respiration since a relatively larger surface is exposed in small potatoes, with a consequently easier access of oxygen to the tissues. Indeed Hoffman (20) has found the surface area to be a limiting factor.
