D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: A Homiletical Model for Preaching With Puritan Piety and Unction
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis is a study of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’s homiletical theology as practiced throughout his pulpit ministry. Lloyd-Jones remains one of the most influential protestant voices of the twentieth century. This dissertation argues that Lloyd-Jones consciously retrieved and reappropriated key Puritan homiletical emphases—especially doctrinal exposition, experimental application, ministerial piety, and pneumatological dependence. These emphases provide a compelling model for contemporary evangelical preaching. Chapter 1 sets forth the thesis and introduction to the need for further study on the life and ministry of Lloyd-Jones. Chapter 2 continues with a brief biographical sketch of Lloyd-Jones’s life and theological trajectory. This chapter seeks to answer how his reading of the Puritans shaped his ministerial and homiletical commitments, particularly his emphasis on doctrinal preaching. Chapter 3 examines the place and prominence of Puritan piety in Lloyd-Jones’s homiletic and how his emphasis on experience in the Christian life is founded upon Puritan practices. Chapter 4 examines the influences and commitments of experimental Christian living that brought Lloyd-Jones to reclaim the primacy of prayer for the pulpit and pastoral devotional living. Chapter 5 examines how Reformed and Puritan pneumatology corresponds to and shaped Lloyd-Jones’s belief and practice in the pulpit. Chapter 6 will conclude with a summary examination and application of Lloyd-Jones’s doctrinal, experimental, and pneumatological commitments for spiritual preaching, particularly emphasizing divine unction and piety.
