Expository preaching as a means to fulfill Paul's admonitions in the pastoral epistles to confront and correct false teaching

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This dissertation argues that expository preaching can serve as a means to fulfill Paul's admonitions in the Pastoral Epistles to confront and correct false teaching. Chapter 1 defines the thesis and methodology of the dissertation. Chapter 2 provides exegesis of specific texts in the Pastoral Epistles dealing with false teaching. This chapter establishes the biblical basis upon which the thesis stands. In chapter 3, the exegetical information is synthesized and used to argue that a mandate exists in the Pastoral Epistles to confront and correct false teaching. This chapter surveys characteristics of the false teachers. It outlines Paul's methodology of confrontation and correction. Chapter 4 presents a definition of expository preaching. It provides a study of several contemporary definitions of expository preaching. To derive a definition, essential commitments and elements of expository preaching are presented. Paul's methodology presented in chapter 3. This chapter also argues that expository preaching is superior to topical and narrative preaching for the purpose of confronting and correcting false teaching. The sixth chapter offers application to the contemporary church based on the argumentation of the dissertation. Based on Paul's admonitions, this chapter puts forward a plea for the modern church to confront and correct false teachers. This chapter provides argumentation relating to why the church should engage in expository preaching.
