A contextualized training program for twenty-first century Korean missionaries

This dissertation examines the five major factors used to develop a contextualized missionary training program for Korean missionaries. Chapter 1 defines the subject of missionary training in Korea. The research methodologies, terminologies, and limitations are explained to answer these questions: Why does the Korean missionary need to be in a twenty-first century contextualized training program? How can we train them more effectively? Chapter 2 deals with the background of missionary training from the biblical, historical, missiological, anthropological, and educational foundations. This chapter also analyses general theories about missionary training programs including the curriculum development process, the qualifications of trainer and trainee, and the types and models for missionary training programs. Chapter 3 focuses on missionary training in Korea. The historical background of mission movements and missionary training programs, in Korea, are examined. This chapter also includes an analysis of the Korean missionary training centers, and their problems and needs. Chapter 4 addresses the Korea Baptist Foreign Mission Board (KBFMB) and the World Missions Training Center (WMTC). This chapter includes information about the foundation, brief history, and current mission status of the KBFMB and the WMTC. Chapter 5 suggests the need for five major factors of a contextualized missionary training program for Korean missionaries. It includes the following: change of context in the world and Korea, Korean and Christian cultural characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of Korean missionaries, adult educational methodologies, and the fields and ministries of Korean missionaries. Chapter 6 concludes this dissertation with several recommendations for effective cross-cultural missionary training for both missionary training programs and missionary training centers in Korea.
