PICTURE PRE-PROCESSING INTERFACE FOR THE SIGMA-2 COMPUTER

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The need for bringing automation into the field of human chromosome identification and karyotyping is introduced via a brief account of the biology of chromosomes and the effects upon them of electromagnetic radiations. Problems associated with the identification of chromosomes by mechanical means are discussed in the light of pattern recognition techniques, and the need for an adequate picture pre-processing scheme considered. This leads to a description of FIDAC in which an alternative driving mode is introduced. The logic of FIDAC is then described in detail in order to introduce a discussion of the conversion modifications and the Sigma -2 interface. Finally, the Sigma-2 programs are described and some results obtained with a modified FIDAC are shown.
