Two series of compounds, (A) and (B), were prepared to examine the relationship between chemical structure and antimicrobial activity. Comparison of their antimicrobial properties should indicate whether flexibility or rigidity is favored for optimum biological activity in these compounds. It was considered that if the alcohols were biologically active, then utilization of the concept of latentiation may yield compounds with enhanced potency. Esterification would enable the alcohols to be released at different rates.
