A NEW PENETRATION APPARATUS FOR LOW SLUMP CONCRETE

Workability is an important property of concrete and its measurement in the field for low slump concrete is a problem. Hence, a new penetration apparatus was devised by K. W. Nasser to measure workability. This apparatus, which is convenient and simple to operate was used in this investigation. Tests were performed on 7 mixes: three were plain and the other four were fibre reinforced concrete. The fibre content was either 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 pounds per 1.31 cubic yard (CY) (681, 908, 1135 or 1362 grams/cubic meter) of concrete. The results of the test were compared to those of the Vebe and the Inverted slump-cone tests and they showed that workability increased with an increase in water content or W/C ratio once maximum cohesion between the materials was overcome. In the fibre reinforced concrete the results correlated well with the other two tests: the Vebe and the Inverted slump-cone and they all showed that workability decreased with an increase in the fibre content of the mix.
