Evaluation of the management of social risks associated with urban regeneration in cities

This thesis addresses the management of social risks within an urban regenerationContext. In understanding why there is a need to regenerate cities and looking at theprocesses involved with that regeneration, the social risks associated with the projectcan be evaluated. The importance of how the project and the urban community interreactis a crucial part of the evaluation. The role of the management team and thepublic-private partnership are also incorporated to provide a holistic view of urban regeneration.The methodologies employed are that of case study, incorporating analysis ofdocuments, semi -structured interviews and observation as a strategy for theevaluation. The single case studied was that of the A6 project in Ardwick, Manchester.The study findings were, while there was an understanding and awareness of thesocial risks associated with urban regeneration there was no formal managementtechniques in place to address these risks. Indeed there was a marked lack of riskmanagement technologies of any kind for the social risks and this led to them beingdealt with in an ad hoc manner. The use of even basic risk management technologieswould prove innovative in the project studied and would serve to highlight the socialrisks at a stage in the project where they could be influenced by all the stakeholders.
