dc:description.abstractThis study investigates the relationship between intertextuality and translationwith the aim of aiding the translator make more theoretically enlighteneddecisions in this area of special difficulty.The critical review of the literature on translation and intertextualityprovided in Part I reveals that none of the approaches is able to provide anexplanatory account of the relationship between them, as they are based ondeficient, and sometimes contradictory, accounts of the concept ofintertextuality itself.In Part II it is shown how Sperber and Wilson's (1986/1995) relevancetheoreticapproach to cognition and communication provides answers to theproblems raised in Part I. A relevance-theoretic analysis of intertextuality isdeveloped, based on the notions of metarepresentation and interpretive use. Itis shown how, together with the relevance-theoretic account of translationproposed by Gutt (1991/2000), this analysis is able to provide a more adequatetheoretical foundation for the resolution of practical translation problems.
