Routingprotocols running within MANETs provide mobile hosts (or nodes) the ability tocommunicate with each other; and the design of routing protocols has encouraged researchersto investigate new strategies that establish connections.The main aim of the research presented in this thesis was to design and implement an efficientrouting protocol for MANET based on the characteristics of UWB technology. The LocationAided Routing protocol scheme 1 (LARI) was first considered in order to satisfy therequirements of the proposed routing protocol which combines the advantages of the requestzone in LAR and the dynamic extended zones in the modified schemes of LAR. The keyobjectives of this research were to reduce the power consumption of the mobile nodes andthus increasing the lifetime of network, reduce the routing overhead, and increase routereliability.The software simulator QualNet was used to implement and test the modified protocol inorder to prove its efficiency. The resultant simulation was then compared with the simulatedresults of existing routing protocols such as Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV)and LARI. Simulation results show that the new protocol outperforms both the AODV andLARI protocols by increasing the network lifetime, reducing the routing overhead, and alsoby providing the highest throughput. An analytical model was developed to prove thecorrectness of the modified LARI protocol. This model determines the probability of findinga valid node that receives the Route Request and can forward it to its neighbour nodes, thisrepresents the routing overhead of the protocol.
