Green building : concept and practice

This thesis addresses the question: what is a greenbuilding? This question is fundamental to thoseacademics, research bodies and practising constructionprofessionals who seek to audit and to assess greenbuildings. It seeks to illuminate the breadth and foci ofthe current received wisdom in this area of interest.Green buildings are defined in terms of the broader greencriteria and also criteria particular to buildings.Initially political and economic definitions arediscussed to establish the criteria which characterisegreenness and cover the spectrum of ideas fromenvironmentalism to ecologism. The thesis moves on todiscuss and establish definitions of green buildings andto identify field leaders. The rationale and consistencyof the definitions are examined and discussed toilluminate the differences in current thinking on thedefinition of green buildings. A multidimensionalscalogram analysis is undertaken to dissect thedefinitions and to give insight into the definition ofgreen building. In the penultimate chapter conclusionsare drawn and the final chapter posits an agenda forresearch to further illuminate and to progress ourunderstanding of green buildings.
