The distribution and population dynamics of Corixdae in potentially unstable habitats

The distribution of Corixidae in stable habitats (lakes)has been shown to be related to a series of environmentalparameters, for example major ion concentrations and theaccumulation of vegetation and organic matter. (Macan1954; Savage 1982, 1989). It is considered that similarecological relationships probably occur in potentiallyunstable habitats. It appears that they may be utilisedas biological indicators of water quality and for themonitoring of changing water quality in relation to botheutrophication and acidification. (Henrikson and Oscarson1985; Jansson 1987).This supposition is discussed in relation to a number ofenvironmental parameters, primarily conductivity (as asummation of major ion and nutrient concentrations), andthe accumulation of organic matter and vegetation.It was found that corixids are unable to act as accuratebiological indicator due to a poor understanding of theirautecology and extensive overlapping of their ecologicalrequirements.A possible application is discussed as by ordination theyhave the potential to act as marker species of unusualhabitats in a geographical region.
