A framework to assess the sustainability of an employee suggestion system in the UAE organizations

dc:description.abstractEmployee Suggestion Systems (ESS) is a tool widely used by the corporations toelicit employees' creative ideas. It will elicit suggestions from employees, classifythem, and dispatch them to the "experts" for evaluation. After this, the suggestionmight be adopted, in which case the suggestion may well be rewarded. "Experts "arededicated committees who evaluate the suggestions and propose them for itsimplementations.Employee Suggestion Systems create win-win situation for employers and employeesalike. However, despite the many benefits of the suggestion systems, the sustainingthem is still a challenge for organizations. Organizations need to assess theirsuggestion schemes to determine their sustainability and to examine if the rightconditions exist for the suggestion schemes to flourish. After all, suggestion systemscan contribute to build organizations innovative capability.This research is an attempt to develop a framework to assess the sustainability of asuggestion system. This research explored the critical success factors and barriers tothe success of the suggestion systems. It used both qualitative and quantitativemethods to collect the data. The data was statistically tested to identify indicator toassess the sustainability of the suggestion system. The key findings of this researchsuggest five factors for assessing the sustainability of the suggestion system. Theseinclude: Leadership and Work Environment, System Capability, SystemEffectiveness, Organizational Encouragement and System Barriers. Sustainability of asuggestion system can be understood as a three stage model comprising three stages:The initial stage, the developmental stage and the advanced stage. The key practicesassociated for each of these stages are discussed in detail. Based on these findings, aframework to assess the sustainability of a suggestion system and the guidelines touse the framework are proposed.
